What employers look for

Accounts clerk adverts ask for Matric, often an accounting or bookkeeping certificate, and experience in creditors, debtors, bank reconciliations, petty cash or month-end. They name software: Sage Pastel, Sage Business Cloud, Xero, QuickBooks, SAP and Excel. Some ask for a few years of experience. Show the volume you process, how accurate you are, and the systems you use.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between an accounts clerk and a bookkeeper?
Titles overlap. A bookkeeper usually keeps the books up to the trial balance; an accounts clerk usually handles parts such as creditors, debtors or captures. Use the title the advert uses and show what you did.
Do I need a qualification?
Many adverts ask for Matric and treat a bookkeeping or accounting certificate as an advantage. Experience with the right software counts a lot.
